Thin Slice Photography is photography inspired by the concept of thin slicing. Thin slicing is the subconcious ability of the brain to generate a full understanding and appreciation of a whole scene based on a few key cues within seconds. Humans are continually thin slicing. It's this ability that guides our first impressions of people, places and situations with amazing accuracy. The observational power of the brain is at its greatest when presented with unfamiliar surroundings. Time appears to slow because our senses are constantly engaged . It's often these first observations that stay with us throughout our life, forming lasting memories of people, places and events. Thin Slice Photography builds on this concept to bring to you a series of portfolios aimed at providing key cues from which to form an appreciation of the greater sense and wonder of parts of our world. Each portfolio is thematically focused on a place, object or concept. Geographical portfolios present a series of photos with a breadth of diversity, which may contain familiar icons presented in a mood or from an angle that casts a different light on their character. Portfolios based on objects or concepts are more introspective examinations of the world around us. Images that are taken for granted by our subconscious are presented in a manner that causes us to re-examine the familiar, taking away new impressions and insight, as fine art often does. Individual photographs stand alone on merit as fine art prints but hopefully the portfolios stand above the sum of their individual pieces by giving the viewer a sense of place, time and understanding that can be appreciated by those both familiar and unfamiliar with their subject. Portfolios are presented by individual photographers who strive to bring the world to the world through their art. |
